Another week, another summary. Thankfully the list was a lot quieter this week; maybe my outburst in the summary helped. Probably not. Ah well. I bet you weren't expecting this so soon, either, eh? Eh? Heh. The week seemed to start with much discussion of pizza, sparked by Greg McCarroll and continued by Patrik Nordebo, who ruminated on mozarella. Matt Jones got on his soapbox over Dominoes funding (which Todd Larason later replied to), while Simon Wistow didn't like their adverts, but then he doesn't like companies that globalise names either. Replicant did boycott Pepsi, but apparently they're now out of Burma; Arp pondered on localising names and Oil of [OU]lay, Ian Malpass disliked the Jif ads. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047497.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047506.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047601.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047509.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047513.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047511.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047528.html British politics made a fairly short lived comeback; Matt Jones posted the text of a BBC News piece after a Jack Straw interview on Radio 4; Steve Mynott called it 'typical New Labour bullshit' and Simon Kinahan was cross and sad, while Rick Booth was apoplectic. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047534.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047549.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047556.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047597.html There was a thread on logic, which also swung by a cartoon, that spanned the weeks; Patrik Nordebo thought the language had to be a Pascal-derived scripting language, Todd Larason extended the discussion, and Chris explained why he wondered what it was. David Cantrell pointed out that true and false were language (at least) dependent; Ashley confused us all. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047498.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047563.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047585.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047548.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047552.html Matt Jones also started a thread on Usborne spy books; Ashley also remembered them, and found Falcon Travis sightings from as recently as 1993. Todd Larason mentioned that there are some new series on American TV with spies in. Ashley posted an infoburst on Salamander books. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047570.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047576.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047722.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047750.html There was a big argument involving Daynal and 'the usual suspects', then Stuart Wyatt started (inadvertently) a cascade by asking about quarantining stuff. Ashley wanted to ban Daynal, but no-one else did (well, not publically, anyway), so, um, we didn't. Greg enjoys her presence anyway, and I didn't like the idea of blackballing people. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047663.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047703.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047711.html Simon Wistow ranted about his Vaio, and a few people offered replacements; Greg McCarroll preferred his Indy, but Steve Mynott wondered about a couple of security holes, and David Cantrell talked about graphics cards for old Suns. Chris Ball also had a SGI, albeit with a less groovy name. Patrik Nordebo could have had a Sun at work. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047580.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047646.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047647.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047648.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010924/047655.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047661.html Chris Heathcote wondered about minds falling out and the bottom of wells, while Simon Wistow wondered if anyone had seen Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow- the answer seemed to be 'no'. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047675.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047686.html Ashley Pomeroy decided his favourite word was 'legume', after which there was discussion on how to pronounce it (in a creepy French accent, according to a_void, duncan followed up the film reference); what they are (plants in the pea family, via Chris Devers) and got confused with the French language (thanks to Stuart Wyatt, who was corrected by Robin Houston). http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047664.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047699.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047689.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047693.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047700.html There was also talk of fruit; David Cantrell asked a few questions, and Greg McCarroll got confused by subject lines (which is fair enough; the thread was entitled 'Raw Sex'). Robert Shiels wondered about rhubarb, which is apparently tricky to get rid of (but not as much so as zucchini) although lightning can kill it, apparently. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047713.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047715.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047736.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047759.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047783.html Ashley Pomeroy watched Threads, a nuclear warfare bundle of joy from the '80s, and discovered Turkmenistan. William Wilson told him about Armenia, and Chris Devers mentioned the slighly, um, dodgy politics of Belarus(sia). http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047787.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047789.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047802.html Stuart Wyatt was offered a job working with Interwoven TeamSite; Stephen Cardie mentioned a thread on cms-list which disparaged it, while Steve Mynott pointed out exactly what it does. duncan doesn't like it either, but then he hates all web-based cmses anyway; Mike Jarvis made it clear that it's not an app server, and that it's not an 'out of the box' product, and that it's important 'understanding the mindset that goes with the software'. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047842.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047856.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047862.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047870.html In post-WTC threads, Atta's will was discussed by Chris Devers; the most detailed translation was from Patrik Nordebo. Chris also posted the entire text of a Crypto-Gram special- bad boy, a URL would have sufficed (as he admitted later.) Mike Jarvis posted a link to satellite photos of Afghanistan; this was discussed by Stuart Wyatt. Steve Mynott forwarded a very odd story about "eggs". Ann Coulter was discussed again, in the imaginately named 'Ann Coulter again' thread, starting with a post from David Cantrell. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047755.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047779.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047766.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047825.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047843.html Phrase of the week: 'Blinded and Randomized' from Harl: http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20011001/047793.html Links of the week, from Ashley, Mike Jarvis, Robert Shiels and Chris Heathcote: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/ http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/afghanistan/darunta.htm http://www.counterpane.com/crypto-gram-0109a.html http://makeashorterlink.com/?K4642521 This summary has been brought to you by New Order's Get Ready, the British Library courtyard, The North London Media Centre and plough.barnyard.co.uk. |
