Another weekend, another summary. However, while I'll be doing it again next time, I need volunteers to cover the two weeks from 20 April to 3 May, or either a) I'll pick someone or b) there won't be summaries. No previous experience necessary- ask for details! A summary-spanning thread was started by Replicant's trouble with installing GnuPG. After several people had pointed out how to setuid(root) (the first was Robin Houston), David Cantrell's harsher response spurred a discussion on what documentation should cover, with Thomas Fini Hansen arguing that you can handhold too far, Replicant approving Avleen Vig's two-word documentation fix, and Chris Devers looked at Ayer's Rock as a metaphor. The real man pages were also described by Todd Larason and others. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036051.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036061.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036109.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036121.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036137.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036144.html Fun with system beeps, spurred by Chris Devers and taken on by Robin Houston and Patrik Nordebo. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036062.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036080.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036086.html Tshirts made a perhaps inevitable reappearance, with Ashley linking to lots of 'vendors' and Robert Jones contributing a few more. Rob also posted the Ass Game, and Clive Murray quoted from memory. Nifty. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036296.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036451.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036126.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036274.html Steve Mynott posted a link to a BBC News story about head transplants; The Easter Bunny pointed out the use of monkeys for the research up until now. Robert Jones countered that stopping people dying was more important. After a few rounds, Aaron Trevena and David Cantrell stepped up in their stead, while Harl pointed out the low quality of animal research for helping humans. Perhaps the last word in that round goes to the Bunny's retort 'go recompile your kernel.' http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036104.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036167.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036118.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036176.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036187.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010402/036138.html In a continuation, Ashley suggested that maybe brainless monkeys would be a good idea for this sort of thing. Matt Jones went one further and suggested brainless clones, while William Wilson pointed out most of the tricksy diseases are brain related anyway. In a typically random moment, Todd Larason and Ashley moved the thread into a discussion on The Cure. Alex Robinson posted his archetypal selection of interesting links. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036198.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036234.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036265.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036199.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036255.html Jo Walsh opened several cans of worms with her post on 'The Cyberiad'; a discussion on copyright was the first thing to start, with Todd pointing out that translations are both derived and original, and Simon Batistoni comparing the Berne accord on copyright with Kyoto, leading to Robin Houston looking at bias in the press, and Simon Kinahan describing The Doomslayer and looking generally at science reporting. Then there was a lot of discussion on global warming and politics, and then we all died. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036289.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036290.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036316.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036343.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036350.html Concurrently, many of the same posters were also picking up on the idea of the hinternet; Steve Mynott posted about the inevitability of free information flow, as a result of 'underground' technologies, and Jo posted on possile technical details. There was also a healthy thread on the reuse of existing fictional characters, with Ashley talking about Bond, and Replicant talking about Lo's Diary, and lots of people pondering the overuse of HG Wells and Sherlock Holmes. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036330.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036420.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036312.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036347.html The big new game of the week, Black and White, was covered too; Ashley started the ball rolling, William Wilson critiqued it thoroughly, and Thomas Fini Hansen thought it was worth it despite the flaws, as did Rick. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036304.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036393.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036409.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036453.html Other oddments I liked this week include Greg McCarroll's response to the Ulster Scots census form, Chris Devers' unsub info, void@vacant.co.uk coming up with the 'bad maths period', Simon Wistow having a bad train day and Clive Murray sympathising, sort of. (void) got spammed, probably. http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036232.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036272.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036392.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036386.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036429.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036504.html http://slab.org/mailman/private/void/Week-of-Mon-20010409/036411.html Links of the week: Ashley was the first of three people to post the Director Scaletrix game; Simon Wistow made this summary another day late by posting the Editing Room's URL (but I forgive him) and alex recalled the youth of JSW players everywhere. http://www.tv4.se/lattjo/kojan/bilbanan.asp http://ter.air0day.com/independenceday.html http://www.raiden.demon.co.uk/quirk.htm And a happy Easter/ Oestre/ late solstice break/ bank holiday/ chocolate hangover to you all. Especially Ashely- hope you're happy with just the one variation this week. |
