London Underground Service Frequencies |
|
Most of this information comes from timetables that are no longer used and is supplied for interest only. |
In this example, there are 5 + 4 + 8 +12 + 1 = 30 trains in service.
Amersham - Aldgate |
2 tph |
5 trains |
5 trains go back and forth between Amersham and Aldgate, giving a 2 tph (trains per hour) service. Therefore the round trip, including waiting at both ends, takes 2½ hours. |
Amersham - Baker Street |
2 tph |
4 trains |
4 trains go back and forth between Amersham and Baker Street, providing another 2 tph service. This shorter round trip takes 2 hours including waiting. |
Watford - Aldgate |
2 tph |
8 trains |
Watford services share 8 trains, each train alternating long trips to Aldgate and back with short trips to Baker Street and back. The entire cycle (Watford - Aldgate - Watford - Baker Street - Watford) takes 4 hours. |
Watford - Baker Street |
2 tph |
||
Uxbridge - Aldgate |
4 tph |
12 trains |
12 trains operate the Uxbridge services, but because the frequencies (tph) of the two services differ, the method of operation must be complex. In this case, all trains run 2 trips from Uxbridge to Aldgate and back between each 1 trip from Uxbridge to Baker Street and back. Another option might have been for some of the 12 trains to run Aldgate round trips only while the others alternated Aldgate and Baker Street round trips. |
Uxbridge - Baker Street |
2 tph |
||
Chesham - Chalfont & Latimer |
2 tph |
1 train |
The remaining train is the Chesham Shuttle. The round trip including waiting is 30 minutes. |
When a train arrives at a terminus, the driver switches everything off and walks to the other end of the train (which will be the front for the return journey) before switching everything on again. This delay is not a problem if the service is infrequent or the terminus has several platforms, but several termini have only one or two platforms and very frequent services. Here it is desirable to eliminate this delay by having a new driver climbing in to the new front of the train while the old driver is climbing out of the old front. The new driver then drives the train away while the old driver is still walking up the platform. By the time the next train pulls in, the walking driver has reached the end of the platform so he can climb into the new front of this train while its driver is climbing out of the old front. He then drives this train away while the old driver is walking up the platform and so on. This is known as stepping back, because each driver takes over the train after the one on which he arrived. Stepping back occurs with trains terminating at Aldgate, Bank, Brixton, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo during Monday to Friday peak hours, and also occurs at Brixton on Mondays to Fridays between the peaks. This allows the Bakerloo, Metropolitan, Victoria and Waterloo & City lines to run at high frequencies despite the cramped termini.

The number of Northern trains in service is 84 during Monday to Friday peaks, 60 during Monday to Friday midday, 59 during Saturday midday and 54 during Sunday midday. The Monday to Friday midday timetable is identical to the Saturday midday timetable, except that all trains arriving at High Barnet wait longer before returning. Using one extra train to provide the same service makes it easier to recover from disruption.
Old trains (with a driver and a guard) are currently being phased out and replaced by 1995 stock (which have a driver only) - a full fleet of 1995 stock trains should be available by the summer of 1999
Scheduled kilometres in Northern passenger service: 32209 on Mondays - Fridays, 27548 on Saturday and 22156 on Sunday.
This information is from Northern Line Working Timetable number 46, which was used from 20th October 1996 until 26th April 1998. The Northern Line timetable described here has been replaced by one in which only one third of the Monday to Saturday midday trains on the Charing Cross branch continue past Kennington to Morden. Other changes may also have been made.
