Atlases in London Libraries

since 22nd December 1998
London Libraries have an astonishing variety of atlases in their reference sections. The reservation system allows you to pay fifty pence to reserve a book - six weeks later they send you a postcard telling you they have borrowed it from the library two miles down the road. It would have been easier to go there to read it, if only you had known it was there.

I will not visit libraries specially to make this list, but I love atlases so whenever I am in a library I check out their atlas shelf. This list will therefore grow slowly and non-systematically. Road atlases of New Zealand, The Times Comprehensive World Atlas etc are not included because they can be found in nearly every large library. All information here should be considered to be incomplete and out of date, and telephoning the libraries concerned might save you a journey. Libraries included so far are Barking, East Ham, Enfield, Harrow, Ilford, Kensington, Kingston, Lewisham, Paddington, Romford, Walthamstow Central, Uxbridge. My favourites are in bold italics.
