>>> introducting the band <<<

Welcome to another (void) summary, which, although it's done by me, will not
be in my standard style, as the list's just been too busy (hence the subject
line), so I've gone mad with some scripts to extract stuff rather than
figuring out myself.

I'm still looking for volunteers for doing a summary, so if you can get in
touch, that'd be nice. I can go out at weekends then.

This week saw 832 messages, with 101 distinct subject lines. The most
popular of these were:

>>> Not Funny (Was Re: C): 138 <<<

Robert Shiels mutated the C thread (see below) by suggesting that French and
Saunders, amongst others, had passed their sell-by date, and hence sparking
(evidently) a popular, long-running and wide-ranging discussion of things
that were now crap, or always had been, with reference to Lexx, Ben Elton,
Steve Martin, Red Dwarf, The Wars^W Name of the Rose, crapafter.com, The
Simpsons, Green Day, Douglas Adams, camp, Terry Pratchett, X-Files, 'the
Casablanca reference', Isaac Asimov, coelecanths, BtVS, Gilliam, Bill Hicks
vs Denis Leary [0], Peter Wier, Barb Wire, story structure and author
proselytising, tobacco, and in thread drift, schooldays.

And relax.

>>> Re: Batch: 112 <<<

Continuing the thread last week about, of all things, programming, had a bit
about the differences between languages people found difficult to pick up
(TCL and Perl seem to be candidates), and how some people like to string
together shell one liners. (There was also an interlude on typos and lyrics,
but we'll ignore that.)

There was also a biggish chunk about how to teach and how to learn, teaching
computing and sciences (and what an A level is), the rainbow song,
definition of numbers (and zero in particular), the sonar screensaver before
an in-depth discussion of the role of zero in set theory.

Oh, and there's traffic lights in NY, and donuts, but let's ignore that too.

>>> Skool (was: Not Funny): 55 <<<

OK, I've swapped these around, but if I hadn't, this would make no sense.
Outgrowing the reminisences of strange teachers in Not Funny, Skool started
with Replicant's translation of US school terminology to the UK, ended with
Todd Larason talking about universities (or 'schools', as I believe they're
confusingly called over there).

In between, there was talk of Channel One, oaths of allegiance (and flags,
flag worship and fashion, patriotism and republicanism), for-profit schools,
the types of US public school, and the role sponsorship in getting people
into good schools.

>>> Papists (was:Skool): 56 <<<

Following on from the mention of Catholic schools, John McDonnell asked
who'd been to one. It turns out that a few people have indeed been raised
Catholic, some in Papist schools; a few more went to C of E schools, but the
thread mutated into a wonderful Arp riff on the woodland people, discussion
of Thief, roleplaying, reality, marketing religion, and a cross-Atlantic
reiteration of how grades work.

>>> "Chalkboard": 49 <<<

Yet more transatlantic shenanigens as Ian Malpass ranted about blackboards
and their change of name, and Robert Jones posted a quiz a few people
answered before it turned into a discussion about food, and another
discussion of cameras (especially endearingly bad ones).

>>> Scoot: 36 <<<

As Ashley's employers slide towards dot.gone status, as noted by an
appearance on fuckedcompany.com, there were suggestions of a (void) company
(quickly scotched), although if it were assisinating people with hard disks,
we'd be more likely to try, and Simon Wistow's own contractual status with
similarly troubled employers was pored over. Meanwhile in a crossover with
the thread below, we talked about going to Mars. Or the Moon. No, Mars won
that round.

>>> 'Private rocket launch is 'suicidal'': 30 <<<

Starting with a discussion about the 'egomaniac publicity hound' who is
planning to go into space in a cement mixer, and rapidly moving to an
argument over how to make sea travel an analogy for space travel, and a bit
of an interlude over the Persian Gulf, and another on finding longitude.

Originally from a query from Robert Shiels over the death of C of MI6, this
rapidly moved into the other territory that led to Not Funny- various Fifth
Men jokes, John Cleese as R, advertising and its affects on employment, spy
books, and, inevitably, the fact that C is a programming language.

>>> and the rest <<<

Of the 92 other threads, 44 had only one post (some of these were, oddly,
the results of subject line truncation, and others premature thread drift
declarations).

Notable points: Robert Jones being drunk, making old clicky keyboards work,
David Cantrell apologising to Daynal, roo pron, technical authoring, and
laptop buying advice.
